A man was killed in a shooting incident near an elementary school in Washington County, according to authorities. The incident, which took place yesterday morning, resulted in the death of 28-year-old Nasstylejah Wilkerson. He later passed away at UPMC Washington Hospital following the shooting near John F. Kennedy Catholic School, as per the county coroner, Timothy Warco, cited by WTAE.
The students at the school were on the playground around noon when the shooting occurred nearby. In an immediate response, Washington County Sheriff’s Department deputies, who were already on-site for a DARE program, rushed the children to safety. The building was secured, and children in the classrooms were moved away from the windows, according to a statement from the Diocese of Pittsburgh, as reported by TribLive.
According to CBS News Pittsburgh, Detective John Hritz of the Washington Police Department indicated that the violence erupted "right on the street on the sidewalk." Following the incident, the police conducted interviews and began canvassing for surveillance footage to determine what had transpired. Mayor JoJo Burgess commended the swift actions of the school and law enforcement officials, emphasizing the significance of the security measures that prevented harm to the children.
