William Coronado, Dispatch Manager for the City of Maricopa Police Department, regards his team as vital members of the public safety system. "I think one thing that is kind of unfortunate is not many people know what we do," Coronado lamented in an interview with the City of Maricopa. During Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, Maricopa is highlighting the important roles of its dispatchers as the first point of contact when citizens dial 911.

William Coronado began his career at 18, inspired by his grandmother's background in law enforcement. With 16 years of experience, he now oversees the operations of a dispatch center that has grown alongside the city. "My proudest thing is being able to build this new center and being part of a team that is growing with the city because we are pioneering things," Coronado told the City of Maricopa. The brand-new facility, connected to the Maricopa Police Department Headquarters, supports up to 20 positions permitting scalable service for the growing community.

Mandy Hogenes transitioned from a 13-year career in dentistry to working as a dispatcher, finding a sense of purpose in assisting others during critical situations. "I love being there for people on their worst days. I know it sounds crazy, but I love helping people," Hogenes shared with the City of Maricopa. From responding to urgent emergencies to receiving a Thanksgiving invitation from a young boy wishing for the police department's company at his family dinner, Hogenes and the dispatch team handle a wide variety of calls that reflect their important role in the community.

In the previous year, the Maricopa Emergency Communications Center processed 69,279 calls, achieving a 99.5% response rate within the standard 15-second timeframe per call. "It’s a big team atmosphere," said Coronado. "They really rely on each other to meet the needs that are happening at that time," he continued, highlighting the collaborative effort of the dispatch unit, during an exchange with the City of Maricopa.

The Maricopa Police Department is currently accepting applications for positions in public safety. Individuals who are able to stay calm under pressure and have a strong commitment to service are encouraged to apply. For more details and to submit an application, visit www.maricopa-az.gov/careers.
