In a recent announcement by the Maricopa County Attorney's Office, a life sentence, along with an additional 91.5 years, has been handed down to Matthew Segundo for his crimes involving the sexual abuse of three young children. Segundo, born in June 1984, faced a litany of charges, including Sexual Abuse, Public Sexual Indecency to a Minor, Aggravated Assault, Molestation of a Minor, and Sexual Conduct with a Minor. According to the County Attorney's office, these convictions are to ensure he remains behind bars, unable to ever hurt another child.
The heinous acts were brought to light when a victim, compelled by a weight no child should have to bear, confided in school officials in 2022. This act of bravery led to the discovery that both this victim and a sibling had been subjected to Segundo's abuse while living under the same roof. It was further revealed during forensic interviews that a third child, previously in Segundo's care, had also been victimized. In a statement obtained by the County Attorney's office, one of the victims voiced a haunting plea to the judge, stating, "If he gets out, he is at risk to do this to another child, to somebody else, and I just never want that."
The convictions of Segundo encompass a range of felonies, designed to tightly lace the path of justice with the formidable resolve of society to protect its most vulnerable. The County Attorney's statement applauds the victims' bravery: "I am in awe of these children who were willing to tell what had happened to them. Courageous victims help us put abusers in prison where they belong." This sentiment resonates at the core of the criminal justice system, which seeks to provide a voice to those too often silenced.
