Wildfire safety will take center stage at the upcoming Lahaina Community Webinar, hosted by the County of Maui Office of Recovery. On Wednesday at 5:30 p.m., residents are invited to tune in to a critical presentation by Hawaiian Electric Co. (HECO) to learn about the company’s wildfire mitigation strategies. According to a county announcement, Colton Ching, HECO’s senior vice president of planning and technology, will highlight the company’s use of new technology and infrastructure improvements.

Anticipation for the webinar is high given the importance of effective wildfire risk management. The session seeks to not only inform the public about the utilities' safety measures but also to showcase HECO's approach to prevent wildland fires potentially caused by their equipment. The company is reportedly set to "to significantly reduce the risk of a wildfire" by focusing on enhanced partnerships within the community and a fortified infrastructure, as per the company’s Wildfire Safety Strategy elucidated in the county's recent release.

HECO's presentation is but one facet of the webinar. Updates on a myriad of recovery and environmental efforts will be provided by other key players in the region. Attendees can expect news on current operations by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, updates from the County Department of Environmental Management on the Temporary Debris Storage site, and insights on the Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery Action Plan from the Office of Recovery itself.

This interactive event will also offer residents a chance "to submit questions during the webinar," despite the opportunity to send them ahead of the event up until April 14. An array of presenters and panelists from governmental departments and HECO itself will be available for the Q&A, ensuring a comprehensive discussion. The county’s news release emphasizes that registration is a must for those wishing to participate, directing them to the official event webpage for both sign-up and question submission.

The webinar promises to be a key informational resource for the community, as the specter of wildfire remains a persistent concern. For broader access, it will be broadcast live on Akakū: Maui Community Media, Channel 53 and then made available the following day on MauiRecovers.org for those unable to attend in real-time. An in-person meeting is also on the books for May 7 at Lahaina Intermediate School, for community members who prefer face-to-face interaction on these ongoing and critical safety endeavors.
