The Maui Emergency Management Agency will launch a new platform called Genasys Protect to improve emergency operations for Maui, Molokaʻi, and Lānaʻi. The tool will help users stay informed about hazards like floods, fires, tsunamis, hurricanes, and more. Genasys Protect is set to go live at noon on May 1, according to the County of Maui.
Genasys Protect is a platform that enables real-time collaboration among agencies to improve emergency communication. The mobile app, available for Apple and Android devices, allows users to track emergency statuses and receive tailored evacuation notifications. Maui Emergency Management Agency Administrator Amos Lonokailua-Hewett stated, "New Genasys Protect evacuation alerts -- when combined with MEMA alerts, WEA, EAS and sirens -- create a powerful, multilayered system that ensures timely, reliable communication, saving lives and enhancing public safety during emergencies." Users can download the app and register for Maui Emergency Management Agency alerts, choosing notification preferences via text, email, or landline through the app or Maui Emergency Management Agency website, as reported by the County of Maui.
The new system will include a zone map for users to view evacuation zones and receive updates during emergencies. Community events, such as Maui Emergency Management Agency's Emergency Preparedness Expo and the Lānaʻi Pineapple Festival, will offer chances for residents to sign up and learn about the Genasys platform and Maui Emergency Management Agency alerts. Genasys is used in over 100 countries and plays a role in defense, law enforcement, and emergency warning management. More information is available on the County of Maui's Facebook page, website, and social media profiles.
