McKeesport Area School District Superintendent Donald MacFann confirmed the event and notified parents and community members. A neighbor, Regina George, witnessed the accident and described rushing to the girl's aid, finding her conscious but bleeding from the head.
The five-year-old victim, identified as Elena Lihas, received medical attention at UPMC Children’s Hospital where she was treated for a head injury that required multiple staples; the girl also suffered a concussion, her mother, Donna Wright, informed WPXI and detailing the harrowing moment she found her daughter in a neighbor's arms. At the same time, the district superintendent visited the hospital to offer support, accompanied by other school officials, including the principal and the girl’s kindergarten teacher, who lent their support during this time of distress.
Superintendent MacFann has assured the public that a "full investigation is underway" into how the accident occurred, with local authorities being on the scene, as coverage by WTAE showed police examining the front of the school bus involved; the specifics of the event have yet to be disclosed, with the superintendent stating more information will be provided once available.
