Memphis experienced an outburst of violence this past weekend when a vigil, intended to honor the memory of a local community member, was disrupted by gunfire resulting in one fatality and four others injured. As reported by Action News 5, the somber gathering was held near LeBonheur Hospital at Mosby and Dunlap, where the Memphis Police Department (MPD) responded to the shooting at approximately 8:08 p.m. last Saturday.
The violent incident left the community reeling as five individuals were rushed to local hospitals. According to WREG News Channel 3, three of the victims were in non-critical condition. The other two victims were taken in critical condition, and sadly, one of them succumbed to their injuries the following day. The police have not yet released the name of the deceased.
In the wake of the shooting, a spokeswoman for the MPD expressed deep regrets over the event's tragic turn. "We just want to tell the community that we are so sorry for this incident," she stated, as reported by WREG. The MPD continues to search for a gray four-door sedan believed to be involved, urging the public to come forward with any pertinent information that could assist in resolving the case.
Community activist Ardrez Clark, who was present at the vigil, spoke to FOX13 about the harrowing experience. “This was a peaceful event, and it ended up a mass shooting,” said Clark. The call to action, according to Clark, extends beyond condolences, urging a collective effort to address the city’s prevalence of gun violence. "It is time for enough talking. It’s time to get action because innocent people’s lives are being hurt daily in this city," he expressed, indicating a strong need for change.
As the investigation continues, MPD Maj. Sherry Glass has asked local residents and businesses to check their surveillance footage for any clues that might aid the police.
