The City of Mesa has rolled out its annual budget process and is actively seeking feedback from community members. According to a report by MesaNow, city officials kicked things off with a budget presentation to the Mesa City Council, led by Management & Budget Director Brian A. Ritschel and Operations Budget Coordinator Kristi Griffin.

Over the coming weeks, individual City departments will lay out their budget proposals, culminating on April 24. In the name of transparency and community engagement, the city has scheduled two public sessions in May. Mesa City Manager Chris Brady emphasized the city's solid financial management over time, stating, "We're now at a point where we need to tighten our belt and plan for the future." The city's financial strategy is being put to the test as it looks to counter the loss of the residential rental tax and address other fiscal challenges, such as public safety and maintenance costs.

All Mesa departments have been instructed to pare down their ongoing base budgets by at least 2% to help maintain financial equilibrium. Mayor Mark Freeman highlighted the city's strength and fiscal prudence, saying, "I look forward to thoroughly reviewing the proposed budget with my colleagues on the Council and invite all Mesa residents to learn about our budget and participate in this important process." Freeman also recognized the importance of public input on the decision-making that will shape Mesa's future.

Those interested in participating can attend the community sessions: the first is on Tuesday, May 7, 2025, at 6:00 p.m. at the Red Mountain Center on 7550 E. Adobe St, and the second is slated for Tuesday, May 14, 2025, at 6:00 p.m. at The Post on 26 N. Macdonald. Additionally, the budget documents are accessible for review, and residents are encouraged to provide their feedback through the city's website, as mentioned in the MesaNow article.

The tentative budget will be on track for adoption on May 19 after the public and the City Council have had the opportunity to weigh in, with a final approval slated for June 2. Should things go according to plan, the new budget would be operational from July 1, 2025.
