A Mexican national was recently indicted for unlawful re-entry into the United States, the Department of Justice announced. Jose Guadalupe Coca-Escalante, also known as "Lenin Romo" and "Guadalupe Escalante," age 39, is facing charges after he was discovered in the U.S. on September 26, 2024, without authorization, following a previous deportation in 2016. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, his indictment was handed down on April 11, 2025.

Acting U.S. Attorney Michael M. Simpson shared the news, emphasizing that indictment is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty. Coca-Escalante could face up to two years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, followed by up to one year of supervised release, and is also subject to a $100 special assessment fee if convicted. Previously deported on December 8, 2016, the individual was found in the U.S. again.

The indictment forms a part of the broader initiative dubbed Operation Take Back America, whose stated goal is to eradicate illegal immigration, dismantle cartels, and prevent violent crime in communities across the nation. Coordinated by the Department of Justice, the operation focuses on leveraging the combined efforts of various federal task forces, including the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN).

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) led the investigation that resulted in Coca-Escalante's indictment. Acting U.S. Attorney Simpson praised ICE’s efforts. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Carter K.D. Guice, Jr. of the General Crimes Unit.
