A Mexican national, previously residing illegally in California, will soon call a federal prison home for the next five years following a high-speed chase with U.S. Border Patrol agents that led to a conviction for conspiracy to transport illegal aliens, placing lives in peril. The incident, which occurred on July 10, 2024, resulted from a routine immigration stop gone awry near U.S. Route 277 in Eagle Pass, Texas.
The individual in question, Guillermo Hernandez-Gonzalez, 23, has been sentenced to 66 months following a dramatic pursuit with authorities, as reported by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of Texas. According to court documents, Hernandez-Gonzalez refused to stop his pickup truck as directed by an agent, leading law enforcement on a chase reaching speeds up to 80 mph. During this escapade, he even went as far as to reverse his vehicle into a pursuing agent's car.
After crashing into a cattle fence and telephone pole, Hernandez-Gonzalez tried to evade on foot but was swiftly apprehended. Inside the pickup, agents found seven illegal aliens, two of whom required hospitalization for injuries sustained. The DOJ reports that Hernandez-Gonzalez had responded to a smuggling ad on Instagram, promising payment between $7,700 and $15,000 for his participation in the operation. He had flown from Oakland, California, to San Antonio to join the smuggling scheme, as directed by an unidentified co-conspirator.
Acting U.S. Attorney Margaret Leachman stated that the case was part of Operation Take Back America, an initiative aimed at combating illegal immigration and dismantling transnational criminal organizations. The Maverick County Sheriff's Office provided supplemental investigative support in the case. "These cases," Leachman underscored, "are part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative that marshals the full resources of the Department of Justice to repel the invasion of illegal immigration," as per the DOJ. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jayvee Rhoda led the prosecution of Hernandez-Gonzalez.
