Environmental steward and research veteran Michael S. Flannery was awarded the 2025 Theodore Roosevelt Hillsborough Forever Conservation Award this past Wednesday, a nod to his long-running efforts in conserving and restoring Hillsborough County's natural assets. The Hillsborough County's release highlighted the ceremony, which took place during the County Commissioners' Thursday meeting and celebrated Flannery's significant environmental contributions, particularly to local aquatic systems.
In his acceptance, Flannery extended a thank you to the Commissioners and to the Sierra Club - Tampa Bay for the nomination, noting the importance of their collaborative approach, "We, as a group, greatly appreciate how county staff and elected officials consider input from groups such as ours as we are very close to many environmental issues the county faces," he articulated in the same release, recognizing the County's effective management of conservation lands that remain accessible for the public’s enjoyment. Flannery's career boasts 35 years of expertise in ecology, hydrology, and water resource management, with a notable impact on the Southwest Florida Water Management District where he worked for nearly three decades, spearheading research on local rivers and developing key flow regulations.
Flannery's notable achievements include serving as the district's chief environmental scientist, where his research helped preserve key water bodies like the Lower Hillsborough River and Sulphur Springs. The Hillsborough County highlighted his dedication to environmental excellence and ongoing involvement with the Environmental Advisory Committee after retirement.
Hillsborough County named the award after Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th president known for his conservation efforts, to highlight Flannery's commitment to protecting natural spaces. Roosevelt expanded the National Park System, and Flannery's work continues to impact the county's environmental preservation. In addition to honoring Flannery, the Board also recognized Tampa General Hospital and declared April 2025 as Donate Life Month to emphasize the importance of organ donation.
