The Michigan Gaming Control Board has cracked down on two Panama-based online betting operators for illegally casting their nets into Michigan’s waters. According to a report from the Michigan Gaming Control Board's official news release, cease-and-desist orders were served to SportsBetting.ag and BetOnline.ag, charging them with violating several of Michigan's gambling statutes.

At the heart of the issue is the allegation that these entities have been operating without the state's sanction, clearly contradicting the Lawful Internet Gaming Act, Gaming Control and Revenue Act, and Michigan Penal Code. This was discovered after an anonymous tip sparked an Michigan Gaming Control Board investigation. Promoting an array of illegal wagering options, riding on sports, politics, horse racing, and casino-style gaming, BetOnline.ag allegedly let players place bets using credit cards, wire transfers, and even cryptocurrency. Operated from Panama, SportsBetting.ag took bets on similar events and offered rebates for casino losses.

Given a 14-day ultimatum to halt their Michigan activities, these operations face legal repercussions if they do not cease promptly. "The Michigan Gaming Control Board is committed to enforcing Michigan’s gaming laws and protecting consumers from illegal gambling," stated Michigan Gaming Control Board Executive Director Henry Williams, emphasizing the importance of engaging with regulated platforms. This pledge was part of a statement obtained by the Michigan Gaming Control Board.

With the ongoing efforts to curtail illicit betting, the Michigan Gaming Control Board stresses the value of community cooperation, inviting tips on unlawful operations. Concerned citizens can tip off the board by calling a confidential hotline or emailing [email protected]. As the clock ticks for SportsBetting.ag and BetOnline.ag, Michigan Gaming Control Board, bolstered by the Attorney General’s Office, stands ready to roll the dice on further legal action.
