Milwaukee is gearing up to tackle what's described as an illegal dumping epidemic, with plans to establish a dedicated committee specifically aimed at mitigating this ongoing issue. According to an ordinance proposed by Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs and co-sponsored by Alderwoman Andrea M. Pratt, Alderwoman Larresa Taylor, and Alderman Mark Chambers, Jr., the new committee would be staffed by the Department of Neighborhood Services and would focus on the development and enforcement of strategies to combat illegal dumping citywide.
The legislation, Council file #240031, is set to be reviewed by the Public Works Committee on April 30, as reported by the City of Milwaukee. The meeting is to take place at City Hall and will provide an opportunity for public input through online e-comments set to go live in the 10 days prior to the gathering. Should the proposal gain approval from the committee, it's expected to move forward to the full Council for a vote on May 13.
"We have a worsening illegal dumping problem in Milwaukee that is affecting virtually every part of the city," said the Council members in a statement released by the city's official website. The acknowledgement indicates an urgency to formally address a concern that has arguably lingered without substantial intervention for quite some time. The committee's responsibility would not only include the research of effective anti-dumping policies but also the implementation and monitoring of such strategies.
