Getting to know when the garbage truck is coming around in Milwaukee could soon be as easy as a tap on your smartphone. Alderman Peter Burgelis is championing a new initiative designed to streamline the way residents get their refuse collection schedules. This digital push, detailed in Council file #241854, is the latest effort to harness technology for municipal benefits. According to a document on the City of Milwaukee's website, the Department of Public Works, along with the Department of Administration - Information Technology Management Division, relayed their collaboration on this project at a recent Public Works Committee meeting.

The plan is straightforward: QR code stickers are to regularly be included within the municipal services bill mailed to every city property owner. Residents can then easily stick these to a convenient surface like their trash bin or fridge. With a simple scan from a mobile device, they're to be directed to a portal where they can promptly retrieve their collection schedule information. Burgelis highlighted the practical benefits of this endeavor, saying, "I frequently hear from residents that it’s tedious to track down their garbage and recycling collection schedule information – that it’s an inconvenience for them," as he proposes a method to easily find to piece together their refuse plan.

In practical terms, these stickers aim to minimize the hassle of remembering collection days, which can often lead to missed pickups and overflowing bins. The introduction of the QR code system signifies a shift toward more responsive and user-friendly city services. However, users will need to ensure their mobile device's browser geo-location feature is enabled to fully utilize the QR code's capabilities once the program rolls out.
