The awards, which began in 2011, underscore efforts ranging from counteracting substance abuse to nurturing healthier living through food systems.
Emphasizing the collective effort, Mayor Jacob Frey extolled the awardees, stating, "From reducing opioid-related deaths to feeding the community, every single day Minneapolis residents are working to improve the health and well-being of their neighbors." Award recipients also included the likes of the Avivo Street Outreach Team, recognized for their on-the-ground response to the city's substance and opioid challenges.
At the intersection of environmental stewardship and health, Nazir Khan, heading up the Minnesota Environmental Justice Table, nabbed an award for his contributions. As did Colectiva Bilingüe, a bilingual educational collective, both ensuring a fusion of sustainability with community ethos—a critical tenet in Minneapolis' vision for a healthier home space. Commissioner Damōn Chaplin of Minneapolis Health Department spoke to the joint endeavor with, "The Health Department cannot thrive without its community partners and individuals who play crucial roles in transforming lives.
