The Minneapolis Police Department has now launched a homicide investigation following the death of a man who was shot on April 18th in the city; the individual succumbed to his injuries today, as confirmed by Police Chief Brian O’Hara. Reported first by Minneapolis Police Department News, officers had initially found the man in his 20s in critical condition due to gunshot wounds.
Details about the incident indicate the shooting occurred around the intersection of 5th Avenue South and 9th Street South, after which the victim, fighting for his life, managed to drive away only to crash into a family-occupied vehicle, then halted half a block later; the family, fortunate amidst the chaos, was unharmed. The scene told a fragmented story, with evidence of gunfire spread between the initial intersection and where the wounded man’s car came to rest.
Chief O'Hara expressed his consternation over the incident, stating, "Any loss of life is deeply troubling." He added, "While a decline in violent crime offers some encouragement, each new act of violence—each life lost—reminds us how much work remains," highlighting the persistent struggle against street violence despite improving statistics, according to the bulletin released by the department. Minneapolis PD is encouraging any witnesses or individuals with information to come forward, offering avenues such as email at [email protected], a designated voicemail, and an anonymous tip line via CrimeStoppers.
The name of the deceased, along with the official cause and manner of death, will be disclosed by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner in due course.
