In a definitive show of disapproval, Senator Alice Mann joined the majority of her colleagues in the Minnesota Senate to pass a resolution condemning former President Trump’s recent round of pardons. These pardons absolved individuals convicted in relation to the violent January 6 insurrection, an event that left more than 140 law enforcement officers wounded. According to Senate DFL MN, the resolution, known as Senate Resolution 15, represents a clear response to what was described by U.S. Attorney Matthew Graves as "the largest single-day, mass assault of law enforcement officers in our nation’s history."
Senator Mann did not mince words during her stance on the issue. She was quoted as saying, "If we don’t condemn the President’s actions, we are giving him and his administration a free pass, telling the world that it’s acceptable to attack police officers." As captured by Senate DFL MN, the senator emphasized the importance of supporting law enforcement and denounced the inaction of some of her Republican colleagues as both "cowardly" and "shameful."
The resolution's passage marked a decisive moment, with all 34 DFL Senators backing the motion. Aligning with party lines, the vote saw 22 Republicans dissenting while an additional 10 Republicans chose to abstain. This division underscores the continuing polarization in American politics, especially on matters relating to the contentious events of January 6, 2021. The documented results of the resolution will be shared not only with President Trump but also with key figures and branches of the government, including the United States Senate and House of Representatives, and Governor Walz.
Mann's commitment to the issue is personal as well as political. "My brother is a police officer, and I will be damned if I sit by while criminals who attacked law enforcement are allowed to go free. This is outrageous," she asserted. These words, provided by Senate DFL MN, reinforce the impassioned plea for justice that so many officials have echoed in the wake of the pardons. As the dust settles on this latest political skirmish, what remains clear is that the January 6 insurrection continues to cast a long shadow over American governance and the very values it professes to uphold.
