Last week, a man in his 70s sparked a search and rescue operation after being reported missing near Diamond Head Crater. The Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) assisted the Honolulu Police Department (HPD) in locating the man, according to an official report from the HFD.
The search began last Saturday, April 12, when HFD received a request at 2:50 p.m. They were already present due to a prior incident. Following the resolution of that incident, they quickly began to search the trail area to find the missing person. The man had become separated from his wife, who then initiated the search.
He was found on the east ridge of the famous crater. The HFD not only located the man, but they also ensured his well-being. "Rescue personnel were inserted via Air 1 near his location and a medical assessment was conducted to ensure there were no injuries," the HFD document detailed.
After receiving the all-clear medically, the individual was airlifted to safety. The rescue team needed to carefully assess his condition before he could safely be transported. "He was then airlifted to a landing zone where care was transferred to the Honolulu Emergency Services Department at 3:31 p.m.," according to the HFD's description of the incident. The incident ended safely with no injuries, highlighting the quick and effective response of Honolulu’s emergency services.
