Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) have extended the end of the school year to June 17, moving away from the initially scheduled closing date of June 13. This decision comes after inclement weather forced the district to shutter its doors for several days this past winter, precisely on January 6, 7, and 8 and again on February 12. This extension is an effort to fulfill the Maryland State Department of Education's requirement of 180 instructional days, as reported by WUSA9.
In a recent announcement shared with the community, MCPS acknowledged the inevitable disruption this extension may cause to families' plans. "We know this is a change and although it is not entirely unexpected, we also realize that families may have already made plans," Wednesday’s announcement said. This update is noted just before spring break, allowing families and staff the chance to recalibrate before the year's final leg, as detailed by Bethesda Magazine.
The institution’s decision comes after the Maryland State Department of Education denied the district's request for a waiver, which would have dismissed up to five days of student attendance, thus negating the need for an extended school year. Without the waiver, the district was compelled to reschedule, making June 13 a full instructional day at first, but it has since been adjusted to an early release day, along with June 16 and June 17, making for a lighter load at the school year's close, as WUSA9 reported.
With the latest change, not only does the schedule shift for the students, but it also accommodates staff, allowing for time needed to wrap up semester responsibilities. "This important change is to help accommodate staff schedules and end-of-semester grade reporting and professional development requirements in the final days of the school year," explained an announcement from MCPS. Despite the staggering impact of nature, MCPS carries on, ensuring that the educational mandate set forth is met with steadfast commitment, as per details outlined by the Montgomery County Public Schools' message.
