Sean "Diddy" Combs, the well-known music mogul, returned to a New York City courtroom as a judge dismissed the request for a two-month delay of his sex trafficking and racketeering trial. According to CBS News, jury selection is slated to start on May 5, with the trial's opening statements scheduled for May 12. Combs, 55, appeared in the courtroom wearing tan prison gear and blue slip-on shoes, greeting his legal team without handcuffs and also received support from his family members present in the courthouse.
The defense sought a postponement, alleging that prosecutors have been slow in providing potential evidence, which they argued could impair their readiness for the looming trial date. A letter from Combs' attorneys claimed they only recently began receiving new discovery materials tied to a third superseding indictment and are still waiting for substantial disclosures. "Under these circumstances, with discovery seemingly incomplete on a 15-year mandatory minimum count, we cannot, in good conscience, go to trial on the scheduled date," Combs' attorneys argued as reported by Fox News.
Meanwhile, prosecutors stood firm against the motion to delay and ultimately, the judge decided to keep the original timeline intact. Combs, who has been held without bail since his September arrest, faces five counts including racketeering conspiracy, transportation to engage in prostitution, and sex trafficking. Allegations against him paint a disturbing picture of threats, force, and coercion used to compel victims into sex acts, with one accusation involving the act of allegedly dangling a victim over an apartment balcony.
In a bid to mitigate the potential damages to Combs' case, his attorneys also filed a motion aiming to exclude video footage that reportedly shows Combs assaulting his ex-girlfriend Cassie Venture at a Los Angeles hotel in 2016. The defense has disputed the integrity of the footage, claiming it was altered and manipulated, as per the information obtained by CBS News.
