The Nashville Police Department is intensifying its campaign urging residents to securely lock their cars and properly store their firearms. According to the latest figures from the Metro Nashville government, 73% of all guns stolen in Davidson County in 2025, 271 out of 370, have been taken from vehicles. This marks a sharp increase from 218 reported during the same period last year.
The urgency of the issue was underscored by 12 gun thefts from vehicles reported just last week alone. Authorities warn that these stolen firearms are resurfacing in violent crimes, including carjackings and robberies. The department has been steadfast in urging locals to lock their cars, remove their keys, and securely stow firearms to avoid them becoming part of crime statistics.
In response to the growing threat, the Nashville Police Department launched a targeted initiative in February 2024. Since its inception, the operation has yielded significant results: 1,214 arrests, 652 recovered stolen vehicles, and the recovery of 283 stolen firearms. This effort highlights the department’s commitment not only to retrieve stolen property but to disrupt the criminal networks fueled by these thefts.
