North County's elderly residents have a reason to celebrate as the Santa Fe Senior Village opens its doors to provide affordable housing options in Downtown Vista. The 54-unit apartment complex, designed exclusively for seniors and veterans aged 62 and above, is the area's inaugural venture into permanent supportive housing.
Developed through a partnership between National Core and the San Diego Community Housing Corporation, this development was brought to life with support from the County and the City of Vista. Sitting conveniently on North Santa Fe Drive, the complex has 51 studio apartments and three one-bedroom apartments, specifically targeted at extremely low—to low-income seniors. Notably, 27 units within walking distance from various essential services are fully furnished to aid those homeless or on the brink of homelessness, according to the County of San Diego.
The newly minted housing complex isn't just about putting a roof over heads. By placing residents adjacent to the Vista Transit Center Station, it offers easy access to public transportation for its residents who are fans, in the same breath, of its proximity to a grocery store, public park, restaurants, a library, and a medical clinic. "Safe, affordable housing is critical and combining it with much needed supportive services will have lasting positive impacts on this community for years to come," Kimberly Giardina, Deputy Chief Administrative Officer for the County Health and Human Services Agency, told the County of San Diego while praising the project's holistic approach to housing and care.
Amenities are no shortcoming at Santa Fe Senior Village, which boasts a community room, computer lab, barbeque area, community garden, outdoor terrace, and laundry facilities. Investment in affordable housing has been a significant narrative in County planning, with more than $325 million directed since 2017. These funds, generated from various sources, have already contributed to over 2,588 homes, 1,593 of which are dedicated to senior citizens, with an additional 3,292 on the horizon.
