The quest for affordable housing in Sonoma County took a significant step forward in the heart of the Roseland neighborhood in Santa Rosa. MidPen Housing, along with a coalition of government and private stakeholders, has launched a new development project named Casa Roseland. This initiative aims to provide 75 affordable homes for families as part of the larger Tierra de Rosas community development effort.
With a focus on families earning between 30 and 60 percent of the Area Median Income, Casa Roseland is addressing the immediate need for economical housing solutions. Having started construction in January 2025, the mix of one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments is expected to be completed by the summer of 2026. As per Sonoma County, District 3 Supervisor Chris Coursey said, "Today marks an important moment in our efforts to address our region’s affordable housing crisis and ensure Sonoma County remains a place where everyone has the opportunity to thrive."
Casa Roseland offers housing and amenities that contribute to community and family life. It will include a community room, a learning center for educational activities, a teen room, convenient bike storage, and laundry facilities. Additionally, outdoor spaces, which include a landscaped BBQ area and a children’s play area, ensure a wholesome environment.
According to a Sonoma County press release, Matthew O. Franklin, President and CEO of MidPen Housing, mentioned that "Casa Roseland and Tierra de Rosas grew from the power of community vision and collaboration." Revealing the collective endeavor behind the project, Franklin highlighted the combined efforts of various partners, including the State, City, and County leaders, who have strongly committed to supporting the development.
Multiple public and private sources have provided financing for this project. Contributions include funding from the Sonoma County Community Development Commission, the California Strategic Growth Council through its Affordable Housing and Sustainable Communities (AHSC) program, and support from several financial institutions and state committees.
