San Antonio commuters now have access to a new ramp connecting State Highway 151 to Loop 1604 after the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) announced its early opening. Originally scheduled for last Saturday, the ramp’s opening was delayed due to weather conditions but was instead opened yesterday morning, according to KSAT. The ramp provides westbound SH 151 drivers with a direct route to northbound Loop 1604, offering an improved connection for local traffic.
The opening of this ramp is a segment of the larger SH 151 Expansion project, which TxDOT cites will "increase connectivity and enhance safety along the corridor from Loop 410 to Loop 1604." The project, which began in the summer of 2023 and is set to conclude in 2026, includes, a total investment of approximately $97.8 million. It takes in the expansion of mainlanes, along with upgrades to ramps, intersections, and frontage roads, plus a new direct ramp to Loop 1604. KENS 5 reported that the temporary northbound Loop 1604 entrance ramp before Culebra Road closed permanently starting last Friday, clearing the way for the latest development in the city's infrastructure.
TxDOT has stated that the expansion project is a key initiative aimed at modernizing and improving transportation infrastructure in the area. With San Antonio's population and traffic increasing, these improvements are necessary to address the growing needs of the city. The direct ramp is part of a broader plan to reduce traffic congestion, shorten travel times, and enhance safety on one of the city's busiest corridors.
TxDOT notes that construction schedules may change depending on weather conditions, as per KENS 5.
