Motorists traveling between Tampa and Orlando have a reason to celebrate as new congestion relief lanes on I-4 at Champions Gate opened this morning. According to WESH, the expansion includes seven miles of lanes on both sides of the interstate, extending from US-27 in Polk County to just east of World Drive in Orange County. Commuters now have access to an extra lane in each direction, increasing the count from three to four lanes.
This timely development is part of the larger "Moving I-4 Forward" initiative, which aims to transform the heavily trafficked corridor. These new lanes were initially slated to open at the end of the year; however, due to expedited work schedules, they were available eight months early. As noted by WFTV, this improvement is "just the beginning of further enhancements" designed to improve local travel times in this bustling business corridor.
The project's completion was timely, coinciding with the upcoming opening of Epic Universe in May, which may help mitigate the anticipated increase in traffic volume. While some backups were observed, WESH coverage showed an overall improvement in traffic flow from aerial views provided by Chopper 2.
