New York City Bolsters Security with New NYPD World Trade Center Command Facility

New York City Mayor Eric Adams and NYPD Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch have taken a significant step towards reinforcing the security of the city's heart by inaugurating the new World Trade Center (WTC) Command facility. The new command center, situated at 27 Cliff Street, just a stone's throw from the vast 16-acre WTC Campus, has been established to enhance the capabilities of the team dedicated to protecting this emblematic area. As reported, the upgraded command post is designed to meet the heightened demands of counterterrorism efforts in a post-9/11 world, as per the Mayor's office.

Mayor Adams emphasized the essence of relentless vigilance in safeguarding the metropolis, declaring, "The safety of our city is not an accident. Counterterrorism is a discipline that requires constant efforts and eternal vigilance — and this new command is a facility worthy of the team tasked with this important work." Commissioner Tisch reiterated the importance of the location, stating, “The World Trade Center is more than a transit hub or a commercial center – it’s a symbol of resilience, and protecting it is one of the NYPD’s most critical responsibilities. This command plays a central role in that effort – and now has the space and resources to carry it out. We’re grateful to Mayor Adams and our partners at DCAS for ensuring our officers have the space and support they need to safeguard this vital site,” according to the same press release.

To locate an appropriate site for the new command center, the NYPD’s Facility Management Division joined forces with city real estate experts, identifying the idle five-story building on Cliff Street to house the command. NYPD's Asset Management Team, collaborating with the New York City Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) architects and designers, led the renovation process. The state-of-the-art facility is now complete with essentials such as a muster room, workstations, and an armory for heavy weapons, ensuring the 126-strong police unit, under Deputy Inspector Daniel Magee, is well-equipped to perform their duties.

The WTC Command's personnel, inclusive of nine lieutenants, 16 sergeants, 100 police officers, and three civilian administrators, are proficient in a range of specialized skills like active shooter response and radiation detection. The new center is constructed with a variety of spaces to support their diverse operations, such as high-visibility posts at key landmarks and discrete plainclothes officers blending within the crowds. The facility’s modernization hasn't altered the officers' primary function - to fortify the WTC Campus, which attracts millions to its memorials and transit systems every year, as Commissioner Tisch told the Mayor's office.

Apart from the enhanced command center itself, an enclosed parking garage at 80 John Street is now part of the NYPD's infrastructure, providing 10 parking spaces equipped with electric vehicle charging stations. The WTC Command will continue to work in unison with agencies such as the Port Authority Police Department and the New York State Police, ensuring a concerted approach to security and vigilance within the city.
