The San José Fire Department updated the public later, confirming that with drones deployed for visual and thermal reconnaissance, no one was trapped. As reported by KRON4, a bulldozer performing regular maintenance inside the facility struck a support pillar, leading to the collapse. Concerns have been raised about the potential for additional structural failures, especially in light of windy conditions that could still threaten the walls now lacking roof support.
Witnesses and officials provided detailed accounts, including a statement from a customer, Armando Alvarez, who was nearly caught in the collapse. Alvarez told ABC7 News, "It go in, seconds in, goes fast. All the building down. It didn't take five minutes. It took seconds. The entire building down on the floor." He recounted the terrifying moment when the structure gave way, fortunate for his safety that he had just turned his back when the noise began and shook the grounds beneath him.
In the aftermath, Battalion Chief Bret Maas addressed concerns regarding the stability of the remaining structure. "The biggest thing is why we had the initial collapse but we're looking at secondary collapse at this point," Maas stated in an interview acquired by KRON4. With the building now red-taped, it falls to the property owners to determine what caused the collapse and to decide the next steps forward.
