In the wake of the destruction left by Hurricane Helene, the North Carolina Office of State Fire Marshal, in collaboration with State Farm and Safe Kids NC, is hosting free child seat clinics for affected residents in Western NC. Families struggling in the aftermath have an opportunity to ensure their children's safety on the road through education and proper car seat installations – a crucial service offered at no cost.
The series of safety events kick off tomorrow, at the Franklin Fire Department in Macon County, running from noon to 4 PM. Connecting under the purview of urgency, the resources on hand including certified Child Passenger Safety (CPS) technicians, aim to mitigate one of many worries for families: the safety of their young in vehicles. These trained professionals will be both fitting children with proper seats and providing valuable knowledge for attendees. The North Carolina Office of State Fire Marshal's announcement specifies that the availability of free car seats is on a first-come, first-served basis.
The next day, April 5th, Mitchell County will witness the second clinic at their Child Fest event. With families piecing back their lives piece by piece, this initiative doesn't just hand out aid; it seeks to arm parents with the competence of correct car seat usage. "As families continue recovering from the impact of Hurricane Helene, ensuring their children travel safely is one of our priorities," State Fire Marshal Brian Taylor, told the North Carolina Office of State Fire Marshal in a published statement on their website.
Proper installation of car seats is imperative, and as Allan Buchanan, Director of Safe Kids NC, points out, it's an area where many caregivers fall short. "Statistics show that more than half of child safety seats are installed incorrectly. Our goal is to ensure every family we meet leaves with their child riding as safely as possible," Buchanan emphasized in a statement obtained by the North Carolina Office of State Fire Marshal. To really drive the message home about vigilance and participation, State Farm's representative Kim Conyers said, "State Farm is proud to support child passenger safety initiatives because we know that the proper use of car seats can save lives." She stressed the importance of grabbing this free chance for families to safeguard what is most dear to them – a reminder that is more than necessary, given by State Farm's spokesperson.
Parents and caregivers looking to take advantage of the clinics are urged to bring their children and vehicle to ensure the car seats are fitted accurately to their specific needs. The commitment shown by this triad of organizations provides a beacon of hope in the face of recovery efforts, as they remind the community that nurturing children’s well-being is a shared responsibility, one that extends beyond the immediate crisis of natural disasters.
