Months of investigative work by law enforcement culminated in the arrest of a North Mankato man suspected of being a high-level drug dealer. Rice County's latest announcement detailed the efforts that led to Joseph James Wanous' capture. Authorities allege that Wanous sold large quantities of methamphetamine over a period of time, with transactions occurring in a park zone and across various jurisdictions.
The CRDVOTF's undercover operations set the gears in motion. Agents maintained direct contact with Wanous, and on several noted occasions, the 42-year-old suspect sold them meth totaling over 150 grams in three different southern Minnesota counties. An execution of a search warrant at Wanous' residence by the Cannon River Drug and Violent Offender Task Force, along with support from the Minnesota River Valley Drug Task Force and others, led to the seizure of additional meth and drug distribution paraphernalia.
While conducting the search of Wanous' home near Spring Lake Park, agents found him in the basement, together with an additional 70 grams of methamphetamine, a digital scale, and various packaging materials. These items underscored the suspicion that Wanous functioned as an "upper-level drug dealer" within a network distributing drugs throughout the region, as indicated by the authorities.
Commander Scott O'Brien stated, "Often times drug dealers will cross jurisdictional lines to distribute controlled substance to different areas in the state. In this case, several agencies were able to work together which resulted in seizure of a large amount of methamphetamine that was being distributed throughout southern Minnesota."
Investigators credit the joint effort among the multiple law enforcement agencies with the successful outcome of this case. Alongside the CRDVOTF, Wanous' arrest and the netting of approximately ½ pound of methamphetamine were the result of the teamwork between the Minnesota River Valley Drug Task Force, South Central Drug Investigations Unit, North Mankato Police Department, and Waseca Police Department.
