Northern Ohio and Northwest Pennsylvania can expect a progression of weather patterns this week, with the National Weather Service in Cleveland predicting conditions that will likely have residents reaching for both sunglasses and umbrellas. "Fair weather is expected as stabilizing subsidence accompanies the ridge," states the NWS discussion. Today, following the departure of widespread low clouds, the forecast includes highs ranging from the upper 50s to upper 70s across the region, with the caveat that lake breezes may keep Lake Erie's immediate surroundings cooler.
By Thursday, the area is expected to see a shift as a warm front sweeps northward, potentially stalling near Lake Erie's southern shores. "On Friday, a warm front should sweep northward into our region during the morning and afternoon before stalling near the southern shore of Lake Erie as a low moves eastward from the Upper Mississippi Valley toward western Lake Erie," the NWS explains. This movement will introduce more dynamic weather, including possible showers and thunderstorms, as a cold front passes through Friday night, leading to a cooler Saturday with continued chances for showers and isolated thunderstorms.
For the boaters and marine enthusiasts out on Lake Erie, the NWS warns of a Small Craft Advisory effective until 10 AM EDT due to lingering 4-foot waves, which will settle into calmer conditions as the week progresses. "Small Craft Advisory remains in effect until 10 AM EDT today from Willowick to Ripley," the NWS advises, suggesting that conditions on the lake will mirror the tranquility ashore through Thursday night.
As the weekend unfolds, a second shortwave trough is expected to trigger additional isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms on Saturday. Temperatures will be moderated by the post-cold front, with highs predicted mainly in the mid 50s to mid 60s. Fair weather should impact our region Saturday night through Sunday night as a ridge at the surface and aloft builds E`ward into the Lake Erie region and Upper OH Valley, notes the NWS, indicating a return to more settled weather before the weekend concludes.
