Early this morning, an encounter between a man wielding a knife and NYPD officers escalated into gunfire on the streets of Astoria, Queens. According to Gothamist, the man was shot by police near the intersection of 30th Avenue and 31st Street just before 6:30 a.m. and was subsequently hospitalized, though the police have not released details on his condition.
Details emerged that NYPD had received a 911 call around 6:21 a.m. about a man with a knife who was reportedly following someone. Responding officers confronted the individual and ordered him to drop the knife, but he refused, resulting in officers discharging their weapons. As per a report by CBS News, the man was taken in a critical condition to Elmhurst Hospital.
The area under the elevated subway lines where the incident took place remains cordoned off by law enforcement as investigators comb through evidence. Despite the proximity to transit infrastructure, subway services have reportedly not been affected. This continued police presence in Astoria has led to detours and altered stops for northbound Q102 buses, as reported by Gothamist.
At the scene, evidence of the altercation was clear, with a visible pool of blood on the sidewalk and several markers indicating where shell casings may have landed. The NYPD's Crime Scene Unit was seen collecting evidence, while detectives were actively seeking video footage and taking photographs.
