In an effort to maintain the integrity of Oʻahu's infrastructure, the Hawai‘i Department of Transportation (HDOT) is set to perform critical expansion joint repairs on the H-3 highway, announced the department in a recent press release. Commuters who frequent the route heading Kaneʻohe-bound should plan for some disruptions starting from 7 p.m. Friday, May 2, until 7 a.m. Saturday, May 3. The repairs, slated to take place in the right lane extending from a half-mile before the Harano Tunnel up to the Hospital Rock interchange, are essential for roadway safety.
Traffic patterns will be adjusted during this period with crews shifting vehicles to the left shoulder, this will allow two lanes to remain open on the Kāne‘ohe-bound side of the highway. HDOT has preemptively replaced worn temporary steel plates with expansion joints, components that accommodate concrete's thermal expansion and contraction due to temperature variations. "HDOT thanks Windward motorists for their patience as the department procured the expansion joints and contractor services," was noted in the State of Hawaii Department of Transportation.
The necessity of the maintenance work stems from the typical wear and tear experienced by the highway's infrastructure. Expansion joints are a crucial element that ensures the longevity of concrete roadways by preventing damage caused by thermal expansion. The materials for this repair have been recently procured, prompting the swift scheduling of this maintenance initiative.
To facilitate a smoother traffic flow and safety for everyone, HDOT implores drivers to exercise extra caution when navigating the work zone. Keeping the work zone safe is not only a courtesy but ensures that, "all workers can return home safely," as written in the press release. Motorists are encouraged to check the weekly Oʻahu lane closure list available on HDOT's website for current and upcoming road work information.
