In the first quarter of 2025, the Oregon Division of Financial Regulation has proven once again to be a staunch defender of consumer rights by recovering more than $2 million for the state's residents. According to their latest bulletin, the DFR's consumer advocate and compliance teams dealt with a significant increase in complaints compared to the previous quarter. Instances of insurance woes continue to be the primary pain point for many, with a recorded 868 cases out of the 1,431 total complaints received.
One of the notable victories for DFR involved an individual who sold their vehicle but continued to find it listed on their insurance policy. Despite efforts to rectify the situation, the insurer stood ground, unwilling to backdate the removal. Following the submission of a complaint to the DFR, the agency stepped in, and the insurer consented to issue a refund of $3,354.89 to the consumer. This is just one of the many scenarios where DFR's intervention has made a measurable impact on consumers' lives, as they navigate the labyrinthine systems of financial bureaucracy.
The cumulative effort of DFR's team in 2024 managed to recuperate nearly $9 million, handling close to 5,500 complaints. The range of their expertise spans across insurance, mortgages, banking products, securities, student loans, among others. "Our team continues to put its expertise to work for the benefit of Oregonians," DFR Administrator TK Keen remarked, emphasizing the team's role in providing consumers not just financial recoveries but also a sense of assurance, as per the DFR press release.
Insurance Commissioner and DFR Director Andrew R. Stolfi highlighted the "level of professionalism, customer service, and expertise" that the consumer advocates have demonstrated, as mentioned in the same press release. Another instance illustrating their diligence involved a dental insurance customer who was initially informed they could change their plan outside of open enrollment. This was later retracted, leading to a complaint filed with the DFR. Upon review, the insurer was persuaded to allow the plan change, enabling the consumer to continue seeing their chosen dentist.
