Senator Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) and more than 175 Congressional Democrats have taken a stand against the Trump administration’s move to potentially end the Direct File program, according to a letter shared by Gallego's official Senate website. The free tax filing initiative, which has proven popular among users for its cost savings averaging $160 per return, is now under threat as the tax prep industry intensifies lobbying efforts to see its demise.
In a defiant response to the administration's trajectory which has included halting promotion efforts for Direct File and firing the team responsible for its awareness campaigns the lawmakers have put forth a grim portrayal of the administration's approach to taxpayer support by highlighting the decreased use of the service following a tweet from Elon Musk, head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), stating that the team behind Direct File has been deleted. Following Musk’s declaration, usage of the program dropped significantly, and a decrease of about one quarter was observed, which is concerning for advocates of the program.
"Ending this free, easy-to-use, and popular program would be an insult to American taxpayers, eliminating an important alternative to commercial options provided by the tax prep industry," the lawmakers wrote in the letter, stressing the importance of the service that acts as a competitive force against the tax prep industry’s lucrative operations.
Arizona, which saw the piloting of Direct File last year, has been a particular point of interest for Senator Gallego who has pushed for a nationwide expansion citing its success within the state, the lawmaker's advocacy extends beyond Direct File as he supports a range of tax-related measures aimed at benefiting working-class Americans over the nation's wealthiest; this includes legislation to amplify the Child Tax Credit, the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), tax relief for veterans, and measures to curb tax advantages for ultra-rich individuals.
The pressure from Gallego and his colleagues comes as a testimony of resistance against the industry's influence and an administration that appears to have taken steps that undermine a program simplifying and alleviating the financial burden of tax filing for millions, the reaction to these actions casts a stark light on the ongoing battle for fair taxation and accessible services for all Americans.
