Commuters in New Orleans faced significant delays today as an accident on the High Rise Bridge prompted the closure of Interstate 10 westbound, with traffic being diverted at Chef Menteur Highway. WDSU reports that the incident caused major disruptions, while the eastbound traffic on I-10 was also affected, with one lane blocked on the bridge. The issue began early in the morning and as crews worked to clear the scene, an overturned large truck which had flipped over the divider was responsible for the blockage.
According to WWL-TV, recovery crews were dispatched to manage the overturned vehicle that closed the westbound lanes and the reopening of I-10 came after they successfully cleared the lanes, leading to eastbound traffic flow resuming; however, complications from the day's incidents continued to cause congestion in surrounding areas.
This wasn't the only traffic issue in the area, as a separate incident on the Bonnet Carre Spillway Bridge had earlier triggered a brief closure of I-10 West. While the spillway bridge was reopened, the details of this accident remain sparse. WDSU continues to follow the story, promising updates as further information becomes available.
NOLA.com provided additional insights, stating that the High Rise Bridge closure began at approximately 4:10 a.m. at Louisa Street. The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development advised motorists to find alternative routes. DOTD traffic cameras captured a large overturned vehicle straddling the interstate divider, which affected traffic on both sides of the bridge. Although all eastbound lanes had reopened by 7:44 a.m., congestion persisted, with traffic backed up to the point where Interstates 10 and 310 merge.
