A grave incident shook the community of Nānāwale Estates late Thursday night, as Hawaii Island police commenced a murder investigation in response to a distressing domestic dispute. According to a report by the Hawaii County Police Department, officers were alerted to a situation at a Pahoa residence, where they found a 45-year-old man unresponsive in the driver's seat of a vehicle, exhibiting signs of strangulation after a reported attempt on the caller's life.
The arrestee, identified as 42-year-old Patricia Ann McConnell, was apprehended at the scene and is facing charges of second-degree murder and possession of a controlled substance. Despite immediate attempts by Puna patrol officers to revive the man, including administering Narcan and attempting to deploy an AED, he died during transportation to the Hilo Benioff Medical Center. The Hawaii Fire Department also assisted in the efforts, according to a police statement released yesterday.
Subsequent investigations conducted by Area I Criminal Investigation Division personnel are ongoing, and an autopsy scheduled for Friday morning is to provide clarity on the exact cause of death. When McConnell was arrested, a substance discovered in her possession tested presumptive positive for methamphetamine, escalating concerns amidst the tragedy. The police are now seeking information from the public to further delve into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Anyone with knowledge that could shed light on the events leading to the man's death is urged to reach out to Detective David Po‘ohina at the Area I Criminal Investigation Section, through a direct call or email correspondence. With this plea, the Hawaii County Police hope the anonymity of the island-wide Crime Stoppers number might invite revelations from a guarded community, "Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call the island wide Crime Stoppers number at (808) 961-8300," as the police release emphasizes with the guarantee of strict confidentiality.
