A Palm Tran employee finds himself on the wrong side of the law, as he faces charges for grand theft following an accusation of stealing from the company's vault. According to CBS12, Dario Zurita, a revenue supervisor at Palm Tran, was arrested last Thursday by Delray Beach Police after illegal activities were spotted on surveillance footage.
The investigation initiated when a fellow Palm Tran employee tipped the company off about Zurita's possible misconduct. Surveillance tapes showed him alone in the vault, a place supervisors should not to openly enter during money counts. CBS12 reported that upon viewing the footage, a superior saw Zurita enclosed within the vault and later, observed him carrying a seemingly full and weighty Palm Tran bag toward the employee parking lot. The next scene in this real-life drama: Zurita getting into a company van.
Delray Beach Police officers responded to the scene at 100 North Congress Avenue and conducted a search of the van. They reportedly found a blue tote bag hiding under a sweater that contained $2,500 in single-dollar bills. During the interrogation that followed his custody, and after being advised of his Miranda rights, Zurita claimed that he was "collecting change for another Palm Tran location," a statement that stood at odds with company policy, as per CBS12.
Zurita's booking details and charges, as shown in a post on Facebook, reveal a bail set at $5,000 following the grand theft charge, which lies in the range of $750 and $5,000. The grand theft allegation has certainly thrown quite the wrench into what seemed to be a routine revenue supervision at Palm Tran. Inquiries to determine whether the accused will be able to post bail or be released on his own recognizance are ongoing.
