A tragic incident unfolded on I-24 West near the Whites Creek area this Wednesday morning when a Nissan Altima collided with a Volvo tractor-trailer, resulting in the death of a 42-year-old male passenger. According to a report from the Nashville Government's official website, the semi-truck was attempting to avoid a broken-down vehicle on the shoulder by merging into the left lane and subsequently returning to the right lane when the accident occurred.
The Altima, driving swiftly, attempted to pass the semi on the right and in the process, struck the trailer's tires. This collision forced the Altima to depart from the roadway and eventually overturn into the trees lining the interstate. Authorities reported that there were no indications of impairment from either driver at the accident scene.
While the 30-year-old driver of the Altima and a 19-year-old passenger sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to Skyline Medical Center for treatment, the middle-aged passenger succumbed to his injuries on the spot. The identity of the deceased passenger is being withheld until the family can be notified. Current efforts are undertaken to ensure the family receives the news respectfully.
In the wake of the accident, traffic on I-24 was affected as the investigators and emergency crews worked on the scene. The flow of the interstate resumed later, with drivers reminded to exercise caution in areas where vehicles are pulled over. Questions about road safety and the rules pertaining to passing and merging on highways are likely to arise in response to the incident. Officials have not provided further comments on what legal repercussions, if any, the surviving driver will face.
