Tragedy struck in north Harris County as a sequence of night-time incidents resulted in the death of a pedestrian and the hospitalization of two deputies. Click2Houston reports that initially, a man attempting to cross the North Freeway was hit by a driver and pronounced dead at the scene, following which the driver immediately called 911.
Around 1 a.m., in a separate incident, two Harris County Sheriff's deputies were injured when their patrol car was hit by another vehicle while they were investigating an earlier fatal crash. The driver, 51-year-old Leslie King, crashed into them while they were sitting in the car. All three—both deputies and King—were taken to the hospital and are expected to recover. According to Click2Houston, King is suspected of being drunk at the time and may face DWI charges.
The initial incident took place around 10 p.m. when a Chevy Tahoe, driven by a woman with her adult son as a passenger, collided with an adult Hispanic male who was crossing I-45 near FM 1960, as detailed by Sergeant B. Bondurant of the Harris County Sheriff's Office in a FOX 26 Houston interview. EMS pronounced the man dead at the scene; neither the driver nor her son was injured.
The follow-up collision involving law enforcement occurred as officers, including a field training officer and his probationary patrol deputy while they had activated emergency lights on their vehicle making it clear they were at the service of the community; their car was rear-ended by King's Honda Odyssey, causing both vehicles to rotate counterclockwise said Sgt. Bondurant in his statement to FOX 26 Houston. The crash sent all three individuals to local hospitals after they complained of experiencing pain.
