At the same time, Ohiopyle came in fourth in this year's rankings, which is noted to include towns with populations under 25,000 and factors in their scenery, historic charm, cuisine, and cultural attractions.
Castine, Maine, claimed the number one spot, but the Pittsburgh suburb of Sewickley was revered for its "leafy streets and upscale boutiques" and hailed as a place where "historic charm" mingles with "modern sophistication." According to a Times Online publication, Sewickley is also recognized for its thriving cultural scene, notably through the Sweetwater Center for the Arts, which offers vast classes to the community.
Ohiopyle, last year's top choice, stands out as an "outdoor enthusiasts" paradise with offerings like whitewater rafting, rock climbing, and nature hikes. In addition to the Pennsylvania towns mentioned, Gettysburg and New Hope also earned spots on the list, marking the state as home to some of the most appealing small towns in the region.
Shifting focus to the Vermont towns, Burlington Free Press identifies Montpelier as a hub for history and scenery, with landmarks like the Vermont History Museum and the State House and a vibrant culture that percolates throughout its downtown district. Stowe claims the seventh position, recognized for its year-round outdoor attractions and an art scene robust enough to nab a place on another USA TODAY's best-of lists.
