In solidarity with a national initiative, the City of Philadelphia has kicked off its local celebration of Second Chance Month. According to the city's official website, a series of events orchestrated by the Office of Public Safety (OPS) and the Office of Reentry Partnerships (ORP) are scheduled throughout April. The aim is to assist individuals returning from incarceration into society by improving access to jobs, housing, and community integration.
Second Chance Month isn't just an awareness campaign. It serves as a beacon, guiding justice-involved individuals toward opportunities that foster their successful reentry. By promoting justice reform and encouraging public understanding of the stigmas attached to those with criminal records, the initiative hopes to create more inclusive communities.
Among the many events lined up, job readiness workshops in partnership with Temple University are open to all, although they cater specifically to returning citizens. Also on the roster is "Bridging the Gap," a symposium set for April 23 to foster collaboration between professionals and organizations focused on public health and reentry strategies. Sporting an online registration process, these events are easily accessible to all interested parties.
A highlight of the month-long initiative is "Investafest," slated for April 25. The City of Philadelphia website states that this inaugural event creates a platform where justice-impacted entrepreneurs can compete in a Shark Tank-style pitch contest. The month will also see job fairs and record-clearing clinics designed to pave smoother paths for justice-involved individuals striving for a new beginning. While most activities focus on reintegrating individuals into society, efforts like the Restorative Art Contest on April 18 allow them to express their journey through artistic endeavors.
