In a somewhat unique convergence of dates, this year's 4/20, recognized globally as a day for cannabis appreciation, will coincide with Easter Sunday. The marijuana industry, currently experiencing a downturn in profits, is looking to leverage this timing to revitalize sales. A report from FOX 10 Phoenix indicates that despite a steady consumer base, the average spend on marijuana products has dropped, contributing to reduced revenues from an excess of $1.4 billion in 2022 to around $1.2 billion.
With the joint celebration, dispensaries see a chance to entice new clientele through Easter-themed promotions. "We going to go to church, but, of course, we’re going to celebrate 420 too," a marijuana shopper told FOX 10 Phoenix. Raul Molina of Mint Cannabis stated, "We’re capitalizing on 420 and we’re respecting everything about Easter. You got to respect the big guy." The planned initiatives include Easter egg giveaways and special grab bags, aiming to draw attention during a sluggish period for the industry.
The last time this alignment of dates occurred was in 2014, and after this year, 4/20 won't land on Easter Sunday until 2087, as noted by Independent Mail. The date 4/20 itself has gained significance within cannabis culture through diverse theories, with one widely accepted origin tracing back to a group of California high school friends in the 1970s, according to Independent Mail.
Marijuana businesses, hindered by stringent marketing restrictions and high state taxes, around 40%, are embracing this holiday overlap. Dimitri Downing of the Marijuana Industry Trade Association highlighted the industry's marketing challenges to FOX 10 Phoenix, saying, "That could be one of the reasons why revenue is stagnant, consumption is stagnant. It's because the advertising and the marketing restrictions that are on cannabis." To navigate these limitations, dispensaries are ramping up their social media and local advertising efforts, employing billboards and fliers to promote this unique 4/20 Easter event. Molina further added, "We’re just being very careful. We just want to make sure we don’t insult anybody and we don’t go too far with anything, as far as the Easter part. It will be embedded a little bit, but at the same time, 4/20 is about cannabis. We’re going to be celebrating, we’re going to throw a big giant party. Definitely a chance to get new customers."
