Citizens of Plymouth, brace yourselves for a splash of spring cleaning as the city embarks on its annual ritual to ensure water quality and cleanliness. In the traditional prelude to the water main flushing process, street sweeping teams took to the roads last month, diligently clearing away winter's residue of salt, sand, leaves, and debris. As the street sweepers tackle the lanes of Plymouth, this routine cleanup serves the dual purpose of sprucing up the neighborhoods and safeguarding the city's water bodies by preventing pollutants from entering storm sewer catch basins. according to the city's announcement.
With the streets adequately prepped, water main flushing is slated to get underway in mid-April. Scheduled in a manner that having swept the streets of Plymouth, presumably the water mains eagerly await their turn for a thorough cleanse. This necessary maintenance removes mineral and sediment accumulation that can lead to a degradation of water quality. "Annual water main flushing helps maintain high-quality water and removes natural mineral and sediment buildup that accumulates at the bottom of the water main. Sediment buildup is caused by internal corrosion of the water mains over many years," the City of Plymouth states.
Residents can consult the city's website or contact the Plymouth Maintenance Facility for details on the exact flushing schedule in their area. While the water main flushing is a sign of the city’s commitment to clean water, locals may experience the inconvenience of discolored water, especially when flushing is active in their immediate vicinity. The city advises avoiding laundry during these times and not running outdoor water faucets until clarity returns.
As the sweepers make their rounds three times annually, residents are reminded to keep their waste bins tucked away from the roads.
