Three hikers from Berlin, California, and Canada were rescued from the Kalalau Trail last Friday, after being caught in severe weather conditions. The Kaua'i Fire Department responded to a call at 2:45 p.m., with Fire Department Chief Michael Gibson leading the rescue operation, according to the County of Kauai.
Gibson said, "Air rescues are complex, and when inclement weather is in the mix, that adds another layer of danger." He advised, "These types of rescues should only be utilized during life-threatening situations." The rescue operation involved Rescue 3 aboard Air 1, the Waimea Fire Station, and American Medical Response. Seven hikers were found at the Kalalau Trail landing zone, with three sustaining injuries. They were evacuated to Waimea Canyon Athletic Field, where they declined medical treatment, as reported by the County of Kauai.
Four unharmed hikers were not airlifted due to no life-threatening injuries and bad weather. The Department of Land and Natural Resources interviewed the hikers to gather information. The National Weather Service predicts wet conditions through the weekend, and the Kalalau Trail has been closed since last Friday. Outdoor enthusiasts are advised to follow safety warnings and updates, as stated by the County of Kauai.
