A man has been taken into custody by the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office following an early morning shooting that left a woman critically injured in Riverview. The incident occurred yesterday, where deputies responded around 1:22 a.m. after receiving a call about a supposed accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound at a residence on the 11800 block of Dumaine Valley Road, as reported by HCSO's press release. Leroyce Durham, 43, who was at the scene, directed the deputies to the victim, a woman with a gunshot injury to her lower back, struggling for her life in her own home.
Originally treated as an accidental shooting, upon further investigation, detectives discovered that the victim had been shot following an altercation with Durham the evening prior to the incident, as WFLA News details. Durham, now facing charges including aggravated battery, attempted second-degree murder using a firearm, and possession of a firearm by a felon, was arrested. The victim currently remains in critical condition at a local hospital.
"This tragic incident highlights just how quickly lives can be changed by violence," Sheriff Chad Chronister was quoted in the HCSO press release. "No one should ever fear for their life in their own home."
