A 12-year-old girl was rescued from the chilling grasp of the ocean after being dragged by a strong current at Seaside Beach, Oregon, as reported by Oregon Live. Seaside Fire & Rescue were quick to respond to the emergency, which occurred shortly after 6 p.m. last Saturday. The bravery and presence of mind shown by the girl, who was instructed by her grandmother to float on her back during such danger, is hailed as the reason for her survival.

In a harrowing 30-minute ordeal, the young girl from Salem managed to stay afloat by recalling the calm wisdom imparted to her by her grandmother. The girl "was missing for a terrifying 30 minutes as a rough rip current swept her out to sea beyond the sight or reach of family," the grandmother explained in an interview obtained by Daily Mail. The young swimmer found her bearings, eventually to make it to shore approximately 10 blocks away from where the ocean's grip had first claimed her.

Witness Wendi Monroe described the ocean conditions as "extremely powerful and unforgiving" that day, as she attempted to aid in the search with binoculars from the beach, as mentioned on Oregon Live. The rescued girl was immediately attended by emergency crews and taken to Providence Seaside Hospital, as noted by KATU News. She was fortunately found to be conscious and alert, avoiding what could have easily escalated to a more dire outcome.

Rescue efforts included not just ground personnel but also the use of jet skis, a swimmer, and a helicopter from the Coast Guard to comprehensively search the area. Seaside Police provided crucial support with a Coast Guard boat and Cannon Beach Fire also responding to the incident. These coordinated actions underscore the reminder from authorities for the public to be ever mindful of the dangers of rip currents and to always practice beach safety. "This incident could easily have ended with a much more tragic outcome," officials stated on KATU News in a warning given to beachgoers.
