The City of San Antonio announced the completion of a roadway reconstruction project on Ackerman Road, which provides access to the Martindale Army Heliport used by the Texas National Guard. The rebuilt section, located between the IH-10 Frontage Road and the heliport entrance, had experienced heavy wear due to frequent semi-truck traffic and was the only access point for heliport personnel, according to the City of San Antonio.
Ackerman Road has been reconstructed to improve safety and support heavy vehicle traffic. The project aims to enhance traffic flow for both military and civilian use. San Antonio Public Works Director Razi Hosseini stated that the improvements address previous safety concerns. Brigadier General Monie Ulis of the Texas Army National Guard acknowledged the city’s support and noted interest in future collaboration, as reported by the City of San Antonio.
San Antonio received a $643,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Defense's Defense Community Infrastructure Program and added $275,000 in city funds for a project costing $919,000. The funding approach saved the city 70% of the total cost, with the savings redirected to the Street Maintenance Program. The project was one of 17 approved for Defense Community Infrastructure Program funding in FY2023. City of San Antonio officials noted the project supports National Guard operations and public road use.
