A San Antonio man has been sentenced to 21 years in federal prison after being convicted of drug smuggling activities. The sentence was handed down in the federal court of Del Rio, as Juan Antonio Lucha, 27, faced the consequences of partaking in an operation that trafficked narcotics from Mexico to the U.S. According to an announcement by the U.S. Attorney's Office, Lucha's smuggling efforts included five kilograms of methamphetamine and a substantial 1,627 grams of fentanyl.
Caught by Homeland Security Investigations and the Drug Enforcement Administration, Lucha was arrested on June 27, 2020, at the Eagle Pass Port of Entry. He faced serious charges following a four-count indictment in July 2020, which also involved co-defendants Juan Sustaita Rodriguez and Natalie Andrea Vasquez. On October 25, 2021, Lucha decided to expedite the process and avoid a lengthy trial by pleading guilty to one count of conspiracy to import methamphetamine.
His accomplice, Vasquez, had already been sentenced previously to 300 months in federal prison on Feb. 12, 2024, for her role in the intention to distribute the drugs. Rodriguez, who pleaded guilty back in January 2021 to a similar count of conspiracy, is poised to receive his sentence later this year, on Nov. 24. While Juan Antonio Lucha begins serving his 21-year sentence, the justice system awaits the resolution of his co-conspirators' cases.
The prosecution was led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Joshua Garland, who worked to bring charges against the individuals involved.
