There's a safe solution in sight for San Diegans grappling with the post-tax-season clutter of outdated returns and receipts. The City of San Diego's free Tax Files Recycling event is back, offering secure disposal and recycling of old tax files. According to the City of San Diego's announcement, the event kicked off on April 15 at the Miramar Recycling Center located at 5165 Convoy St. Residents can safely drop off their sensitive documents in secured bins, which will be guarded and shredded before being processed for recycling.

The service is exclusively available to City residents who can visit the center between 7 AM and 4:30 PM from April 15-22, except Sunday, April 20, when the facility will remain closed. To prevent any overload—and perhaps to gently encourage a decluttering of only the oldest of old files—each person or household is limited to dropping off just one banker’s box worth of documents. To vividly picture, a banker’s box is roughly 10 inches in height, 15 inches across, and stretches out to about 25 inches deep.

Launched in 2003, this annual initiative of document shedding has become a city tradition, not just an opportunity to clean out file cabinets. Every year, approximately five tons of paper are collected and given new life through recycling, proving that one person’s trash is the planet’s treasure. Moreover, this event underscores a deeper commitment, aligning with the City's Zero Waste Plan and climate action objectives toward a more sustainable future.
