The San José Police Department (SJPD) has finally put cuffs on the hands of a notorious graffiti artist who has been defacing the downtown area since 2023. The suspect, 20-year-old San José resident Alex Garcia, was linked to a string of graffiti incidents over the past two years by the recurring "GOOB" moniker found at each scene. According to the SJPD news release, Garcia's vandalism spree has caused significant concern within the community and among local officials.
Following a comprehensive investigation, beginning on January 18, by the Patrol Officers with the SJPD Central Division, Garcia was identified as the primary suspect. The SJPD obtained an arrest warrant subsequently, along with a search warrant for his residence, on April 22. While searching Garcia's home, officers uncovered evidence indicating his involvement in the vandalism. The evidence found at the scene led to Garcia being held at the Santa Clara County Main Jail under multiple felony and misdemeanor vandalism charges. In a display of tenacity by the Special Operations – Street Crimes Unit, Garcia was taken into custody without incident.
Police Chief Paul Joseph expressed the department's standpoint on the matter, stating, as per the San José Police Department, "This arrest is the result of dedicated, focused police work from our Central Division Patrol Officers, and it delivers a clear message: we will protect our city from those who choose to damage or deface it." San José Mayor Matt Mahan commented on the impact of vandalism, saying, "Graffiti isn’t just an eyesore, it’s destructive — to small businesses, to community pride and even to public safety."
